Computer Literacy

The Ethiopian Community Services strongly believes that providing a computer literacy program greatly benefits the entire community and breaks the digital divide.

Basic Computer Literacy

Basic computer literacy can greatly assist individuals within the Ethiopian community with no computer background in navigating various tasks such as filling out forms and applications.

Many forms and applications are now available online, requiring basic computer skills to complete. By offering a computer literacy program, Ethiopian community services can help individuals learn how to navigate websites, access the necessary forms, and understand the process of filling them out digitally. This empowers community members to independently handle important administrative tasks efficiently and accurately.
Topics covered under Basic computer literacy include:
  • Introduction to computers
  • Introduction to popular operating systems
  • Keyboard and mouse skills
  • Internet basics
  • Email communication
  • Internet Safety and Security
Intermediate computer literacy typically refers to a level of proficiency beyond basic or introductory knowledge of computers but below advanced or expert-level proficiency. The Ethiopian Community Services believes that the community’s middle school and high school students as well as professionals who would like to brush up their skills will benefit from this program. Topics covered under Basic computer literacy include:
  • Operating Systems: including navigating the file system, managing files and folders, installing and uninstalling software, and adjusting system settings.
  • Productivity Software: Proficiency in using productivity applications like MS Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Google Suite – Docs, Sheets to create, edit, and format documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
  • Online Security and Privacy: Awareness of best practices for online security, including creating strong passwords, recognizing phishing attempts, using secure websites (HTTPS), and understanding privacy settings on social media platforms.
Advanced computer literacy involves a deep understanding of computer systems, software applications, programming languages, and technology.
