Why learn motherland languages?

The Ethiopian Community Services believes that introducing different motherland languages to the community’s children will enable them to connect with their heritage, communicate with family members, appreciate Ethiopian culture, and enhance their linguistic and cognitive abilities.

Currently, ECS provides a weekly Amharic lesson and plans to expand as resources become available.

Here are some of the advantages teaching the Amharic language provides to our kids:

Cultural connectionLearning Amharic allows children to connect with their Ethiopian heritage and maintain a sense of cultural identity. It helps them understand their family’s language, traditions, and customs, fostering a stronger bond with their Ethiopian roots.

Many Ethiopian families primarily speak Amharic at home. By learning the language, children can communicate more effectively with their parents, grandparents, and extended family members. It strengthens family relationships and allows for a deeper understanding of familial and cultural values.

Amharic is one of the most widely spoken languages in Ethiopia. Learning Amharic equips children with an additional language skill, broadening their ability to communicate and connect with Ethiopian communities, both locally and globally.

Learning Amharic encourages children to develop an appreciation for multiculturalism and diversity. They gain firsthand experience of being part of different cultural contexts and can apply this understanding to embrace and respect other cultures they encounter in their lives.

Being bilingual has cognitive benefits for children. Learning Amharic alongside their dominant language strengthens cognitive skills such as memory, problem-solving, and multitasking. It can enhance their overall linguistic abilities and facilitate learning other languages in the future.

If children have the opportunity to visit Ethiopia or interact with Ethiopian communities abroad, knowing Amharic enables them to navigate the country more independently. It enhances their travel experience, allowing them to communicate with locals, understand signs, and immerse themselves more fully in Ethiopian culture.

As Amharic is an official language of Ethiopia, proficiency in Amharic can provide career advantages, especially in fields related to international relations, development, cultural exchange, translation, or working with Ethiopian communities. It opens doors to employment opportunities and cultural engagement.

Learning Amharic helps preserve the language for future generations. By passing down the language to children, families contribute to the preservation and continuation of Amharic as a vital part of Ethiopian heritage and culture.

Learning Amharic provides children with a sense of accomplishment and personal growth. It boosts their self-esteem, strengthens their cultural identity, and helps them feel more connected to their Ethiopian heritage. It enriches their life experiences and broadens their perspectives.

Overall, learning Amharic offers numerous benefits to children born outside of Ethiopia, enabling them to connect with their heritage, communicate with family members, appreciate Ethiopian culture, and enhance their linguistic and cognitive abilities.
